So I've been making Old West stuff lately, and I figured I needed more than just... buildings.
Nothing particularly complex or innovative, but hopefully pleasing nonetheless.
Looking at old photos, I noticed that a lot of buildings had free-standing hitching posts.
The posts are made from plastic pick-up sticks. (Or bamboo skewers, who remembers?)
The bases are steel strapping, 3/4 inch wide: I use them for basing horses as well. They provide weight and stability to the hitching posts.
The watering trough is made from craft sticks. Foliage is cut from larger greenery from Michael's crafts, or is dyed sponge.
The Smokehouse started life as a papier-mache birdhouse, also from Michaels.
The boards and shingles are cut from file card.
The door was made from craft wood and hung as per "How To Hang A Door"
The shelf and steps are craft wood, with a bowl & pitcher from dollhouse miniatures.
The fence section is intended to fit between two buildings, blocking vision and mvement.
It's made from craft sticks, scored to look like thinner boards, based on 1 in wide steel strapping. Foliage is cut from larger greenery from Michael's crafts, or is dyed sponge.
The Barrel is a turned wood craft item, and the poster scanned from a book and printed on my computer.

The outhouse enclosure is based on an Old West original, but I've forgotten the source. Whoever made it did value his privacy...
The fence is made from craft sticks, scored to look like thinner boards, and is glued to a plastic base.
The outhouse is made from craft sticks, scored etc. and glued to a base made the same way. There is no seating inside, to leave room for a figure.
The door was made from craft wood and hung as per "How To Hang A Door"
I left the outhouse as a separate piece: It can be used on it's own, and the fence can be used as a storage area.
I recently found Undead or Alive in the bargain bin at the local Wal-Mart. Listed as an "Old West Zombie Comedy" (or zombedy), it seems to have gotten awful reviews all over the web. Rightly so!
Shawn Of The Dead meets Rustler's Rhapsody it isn't, but if you turn off your brain you might find it amusing.... |
